There are probably only a handful of mothers who can say
that one of their greatest joys in life was a shared passion for flying with
their daughter, but that is certainly true for Nancy and me. When she was about six years old and started
going to school all day, I secretly began to pursue my lifelong passion of
learning to fly. Several months later
when I told my family about my flying lessons, six year old Nancy piped up and said
“Oh boy, that’s what I want to do too.”
The day she turned 16, she came back to us and said, “Okay, I’m ready!”
After taking flying lessons in Torrance and later in college
at Davis, Nancy became a certified pilot.
Like me, she loved the sense of empowerment and independence that flying
afforded. We started a tradition of
mother-daughter spring-break excursions that created some of my favorite
memories. Since being diagnosed with
Alzheimer’s, Nancy has been grounded, but the wonderful memories of those days
are still with me. I know that some of
the innate skills she cultivated as a pilot will serve her well during this
terrible time. That belief, coupled with
the incredible outpouring of community support that we have seen, is what is
keeping us going until Nancy returns.

What a wonderful story! I drive all around the city each day taking my twins to various activities and I will continue to keep my eyes peeled for Nancy. Hope she is safe and warm and please have faith she is found soon. Your family's efforts are incredible:)
ReplyDeleteThank you for helping all of us to know Nancy She sounds like a wonderful person! I am sending prayers and positive thoughts from Birmingham, AL. My daughter lives in LA, just off Wilshire, and looks for Nancy when she is out and about!
ReplyDeleteGod Bless Nancy wherever she is. I am an LAPD officer, my partner and I will be actively searching tomorrow (Sat.) just another set of eyes. All my family is praying for her, and hoping for the best.
ReplyDeleteLAPD officer, is there any way we can contact you with questions, comments, concerns, or suggestions regarding your search?
DeleteI was just telling my husband your flying story, as he's a recreational pilot, too. The thought occurred to me that maybe Nancy found her way to Santa Monica airport, or nearby, and is contentedly watching planes. We do have a large number of homeless men and women in the area. I will stop at daybreak to ask a homeless woman I know if she's seen her, and will share copies of the flyer.
ReplyDeleteI constantly look for her when I'm out. Sending love and peace to the family and especially to Nancy. My heart aches for you all.
